Earnings gap
statistics show that there is a gap in earnings between groups based on sex, race, and ethnicity
other names : wage gap, pay gap, wage differential
Difference in earnings may be a result of :
1. natural ability
2. education, training, both on and off the job
3. years of experience
4. occupation ( some jobs are dangerous)
5. treatment of equals = discrimination
what is the difference b/w an advanced degree and professional degree
most professional degrees are advanced but they provide specific training to develop skills for a specific job while master's degree and phd tend to be more academic and research oriented.
ex of prof degrees: law JD, Doctor MD, Vet DVM
occupational segregation
occurs when one demographic group is overrepresented or underrepresented among different kinds of work and different types of jobs
perfect segregation
occurs when an occupation employs only one group. ( ex. only women, only hispanics )
perfect integration
occurs when each group holds the same proportion in occupation as it holds in the labor force (LF)
horizontal segregation
occurs when each group does not hold the same proportion of positions in an occupations as it holds in the labor force
vertical segregation
occurs when one group dominates the highest status and the highest paying job in an occupation
