Terms in this set (15)
Electric Charge
Definition: Property of matter that causes it to feel a force when near other charged matter
Example: The charged particles are protons and electrons
Unit: Coulomb
Law of Electric Charge
Definition: Like charged repel and opposite charges attract
Electric Force
Definition: Force between electrically charged particles
Equation (or example): Force is directly proportional to charge; force is indirectly proportional to (distance)²
Unit: Newtons
Law of Conservation of Charge
Definition: Charge is not created or destroyed -- net charge stays constant
Example: Rubbing a balloon on your hair gives the balloon negative charge, and your hair: positive charge.
Electric Field
Definition: Force field around a charged object -- (effect on a positive charge)
Electric Potential
Definition: Electric potential energy per unit charge
Equation: Electric potential = Potential Energy/ Charge
Unit: Volts
Electric Potential Difference
Definition: Voltage or ∆Potential
Equation: more voltage increases current
V= I x R (Ohm's law)
Electric Current
Definition: The rate at which charges flow-- how much charge per second
Equation: I = charge/time
I= V/R (Ohm's law)
Unit: Ampere
Electrical Resistance
Definition: Opposition to the flow of electric charge-- reduces current
Equation: R = V/I (Ohm's law)
Unit: Ohm
Ohm's Law
Definition: Current is directly proportional to voltage but inversely proportional to resistance
Equations : V= IR; I= V/R; R= V/I
Charging by friction
Definition: Electrons are rubbed onto a neutral object through friction
Example: Combing your hair transfers electrons onto the comb
Charging by induction
Definition: Charges in one object attract the opposite charge to the surface of a neutral object
Example: Negative charges at the bottom of a storm cloud attract positive charges to Earth's surface
Charging by conduction
Definition: Charge is transferred to a neutral object through direct contact
Example: Touching a Van de Graaf generator transfers electrons out of your body
Parallel Circuit
Definition: Each load gets a separate loop
Series Circuit
Definition: All loads are on the same loop
