Physical Science: Chapter 4.2: The Structure of an Atom
Terms in this set (15)
Protons, electrons, and neutrons are subatomic particles.
a positively charged subatomic particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom. Has a charge of positive one.
a negatively charged subatomic particle that is found in the space outside the nucleus. Has a charge of negative one.
a neutral subatomic particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom. Has a mass almost exactly equal to that of a proton. It has no charge.
What distinguishes protons, electrons, and neutrons?
mass, charge, and location in an atom.
What two subatomic particles have the same mass?
Protons and neutrons
What subatomic particle has no charge?
What subatomic particles are inside the nucleus?
protons and neutrons
What subatomic particles are outside the nucleus?
How are atoms of one element different from atoms of other elements?
Atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons.
What is the atomic number at the upper left hand corner of the element equivalent to?
The number of protons and electrons
of an element is the number of protons in an atom of that element.
the sum of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of that atom.
How do you find number of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom?
Mass number minus atomic number
What is the difference between two isotopes of the same element?
Isotopes of an element have the same atomic number but different mass numbers because they have different numbers of neutrons.
