a sequence where you multiply or divide by the SAME number each time
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
A fast way to write big numbers using powers of ten. Multiply a number with one digit to the left of the decimal point, by a power of ten.
Example- 1.7 x 103
NUMERICAL EXPRESSION
math problem with numbers and operations
Example- 5 + 5 x 20
ORDER OF OPERATIONS
1.) parentheses 2.) exponents 3.) mult./div. 4.) add/sub.
COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY
you can change the order of the numbers when adding or multiplying, and get the same answer.
Example- 9 + 6 = 6 + 9
ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY
you can group the numbers differently when adding or multiplying, and get the same answer.
Example- 2 (5 x 4) = (2 x 5) 4
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY
examples:
5(20 + 1) = (5 x 20) +(5 x1)
4(6-2)= (4 x 6) - (4 x 2)
IDENTITY PROPERTY
any number x 1 = that number; any number + 0 = that number
Example- 1 x 6 = 6 0 + 6 = 6
VARIABLE
a letter that stands for a number
CONSTANT
a number
ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION
math problem with numbers, variables, and operations
example- 5n + 6n
EVALUATE
find the answer/ solve
TERM
part of an expression; separated by a plus or minus; can be a constant, variable, or a number multiplied by a letter.
Example- 1 + 2n + 3z
COEFFICIENT
number multiplied by a letter (in front of)
EQUATION
an expression with an answer; a mathematical statement which states that two things are equal.
Example- 2 + N = 3
SOLUTION
answer; makes the equation true
ADDITION PROPERTY OF EQUALITY
