Terms in this set (...)

ground state
when all of the electrons are in the lowest available energy level/sublevel, it is a nonenergized state and it is the normal/stable state for an atom
excited state
when an electron absorbs energy and jumps to an outer vacant or partically vacant energy level/sublevel, leaving the lower level temporarily vacant or partially vacant, it is an energized state and it is shortlived
a specific amount of energy a bundle of energy, a package of energy. a particle of energy
an instrument that is used to separate the colors of light
diffraction grading
a transparent material etched with many (usually thousands) of parallel lines that can be used of diffract light (separate light into its components)
line spectra
a pattern of discrete, sharp, noncontinous lines characteristic to each element
