Def of rating a worker?
Assessing the effective speed of working relative to the observer's expectation and producing a rating corresponding to a standard.
Why rating a worker?
We are not only concerned with efficiency, but we are also concerned about the work environment, how safe it is, the quality of working life, etc.
Definition of Qualified Worker
One who has acquired the skill, knowledge, and other attributes that carry out the work with satisfactory standards of quantity, quality, and safety
Definition of Experienced Worker
The experienced worker will achieve smooth and consistent movements, acquire rhythm, respond more rapidly to signals, anticipates difficulties and is more ready to overcome them, carries out task without giving the appearance of conscious attention, and is therefore more relaxed. SKILLED, SMOOTH, and COSISTENT
Definition of Novice Worker
A novice worker is new
"Average" Worker
A truly average worker does not exist. In defining times for elements, it's difficult to pick an average person because someone might be an average worker in element A, but a below average worker in element B. So it is difficult to go about.
Standard performance rate
Standard performance is the rate of output which qualified workers naturally achieve in a shift without over-exertion, knowing and adhering to a specified method and provided that they motivated to apply themselves to their work. This performance is 100 on the standard rating and performance scale.
Factors affecting the rate outside the control of worker include:
Quality of materials used, operating efficiency of equipment, methods or conditions of operation, climate and environmental conditions
Factors affecting the rate within the control of worker include:
Acceptable variation within quality, variations due to individual's ability, in attention, attitude, motivation
Optimum pace depends on
1. the physical effort demanded by the work
2. the care applied by the worker
3. training and experience
There is a danger of rating too low when...
the worker makes the job look too easy, it flows too smoothly, etc.
Rest Pauses
Relaxation allowances can be taken in the form of rest pauses. They decrease variation in performance & break up monotony.
The Standard Time
Standard time is the total time in which a job should be completed at standard performance. It is your rating factor * observed time + allowances.
Work Measurements in Office Environments is...
Some office tasks are cognitive tasks, just a lot of thinking, and those are not measurable. You have to be able to see the task being done before your eyes in order to measure the time it takes to do the task.
For the purposes of work study and work sampling it is difficult to measure work done in office environments.
Self Recording Techniques Def
Workers maintaining records of their won work loads and times. TWO methods: worker starts and stops timer for each task. Worker records tasks in a fixed interval of time.
Cognitive so messes things up.
