Protein substance comprising the pigment of the hair.

The process that occurs when Coily hair is allowed to develop in its natural state without the use of combs, heat, or chemicals.
Half-Off-Base
Curl rests on the working part, half on and half off the base. Achieved by use of 90 degree elevation of the strand.
On-Base
Curl rests completely on the base. Achieved by the use of a 45 degree above perpendicular elevation of the strand.
Parallel
Straight or curved lines, equidistant at any point.
Occipital
Large bone forming the back of the skull
Off-Base
Curl rests below the working part, completely off the base. Achieved by use of 45 degree below perpendicular elevation of the strand.
Quadrant
One of four approximately equal section of the head. Sectioning used for some haircutting and chemical application.
Recondition
To restore the hair to a balance state. Usually achieved through the use of humectant and chemical treated protein products.
Perpendicular
At a 90 degree angle to a given surface.
Porosity
The ability of the hair to absorb and retain sufficient moisture.
Silhouette
The outline of a style. Reveals the balance of the style.
Skin
Outer tissue comprised of the epidermis and the dermis.
Relax
Step in the performance of a style in which the curl created by an implement is blended with adjacent curls.
Resistant
Hair that repels liquids and chemicals. Often lacks manageability.
Thermal Styling
Method of curling or straightening performed on dry hair using irons and pressing combs.
Volume
In hairstyling, the degree to which the hair extends from the head in the finished style.
Stem
Portion of the strand between the base and the circle.
Style Part
A desirable division of the hair to the scalp. Visible in the finished style.
Working Part
One of the base parting toward which the curl is wrapped.
