measurement

The distance, mass, volume, or temperature of a substance.

distance

The length from one end to another.

mass

The amount of matter in a substance.

volume

The amount of space a substance takes up.

temperature

The amount of heat in a substance.

meter

Basic unit of distance in the metric system.

centimeter

A hundredth of a meter. There are ten in a meter. Measures small distances.

millimeter

A thousandth of a meter. One thousand are in a meter. Measures really small distances.

kilometer

One thousand meters. Measures large distances.

ruler

Tool used to measure distance.

kilogram

Basic unit of mass in the metric system. There are 1,000 grams in it. Measures big objects.

gram

Measures small objects. There are one thousand in a kilogram and it is equal to one thousand milligrams

milligram

A thousandth of a gram. There are one thousand in a gram. Measures really small objects.

triple beam balance

The tool used to measure mass. To measure start with the heaviest rider and measure to the nearest tenth of a gram.

liter

Basic unit of volume in the metric system. Measures big liquid capacities.

milliliter

A thousandth of a liter. There are one thousand in a liter. Measures small liquid capacities.

cubic centimeter

A cube with a length, width, and height of one centimeter. Measures solid objects. If you filled it with water it is one milliliter and weighs one gram.

graduated cylinder

The tool used to measure the volume of liquid. You have to put the water in, get down at eye level, and the measurement is where the meniscus is.

Celsius

The unit of temperature in the metric system. Water freezes at 0° and boils at 100°.

thermometer

The tool used to measure temperature. Put it in the substance and read the top of the red line.
