- difficulty with pragmatics = deficits in understanding and following social rules of verbal and nonverbal communication in naturalistic contexts, changing language according to the needs of the listener or situation, and following rules for conversations and storytelling
- cannot be diagnosed in the presence of restricted repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities (autism).
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
- a disorder characterized by restlessness, inattentiveness, and impulsivity
- must appear by age 12
- other specified ADHD and unspecified ADHD included
Specific learning disorder
a marked deficit in a particular area of learning that is not caused by an apparent physical disability, or by an unusually stressful home environment
motor disorders
a group of disorders characterized by motor symptoms such as tics, stereotypic movements, or lack of coordination; new subcategory
- includes developmental coordination disorder and stereotypic movement disorder
tic disorders
disorders characterized by sudden, repetitive, nonrhythmic motor movements or sounds, ex. eye blinking, grimacing, throat clearing, grunting
- includes Tourette's, persistent (chronic) motor or vocal tic disorder, provisional tic disorder, other specified TD and unspecified TD
schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders
This is a group of disorders characterized by major disturbances in perception, thought, language, emotion, and behavior; no subtypes of schizophrenia now
- includes schizotypal PD, delusional disorder, brief psychotic disorder, schizophreniform disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective, substance/med induced psychotic disorder, and psychotic disorder due to another med condition
catatonia
a pattern of extreme psychomotor symptoms, found in some forms of schizophrenia, which may include catatonic stupor, rigidity, or posturing
bipolar and related disorders
group of mood disorders where mania is the defining feature; some specifiers = with mixed features, anxious distress; includes bipolar 1 disorder, bipolar 2 disorder, cyclothymic disorder, substance/med induced bipolar and related disorder, BARD due to another med condition, and other specified and unspecified BARD
depressive disorders
general category of mood disorders in which people show extreme and persistent sadness, despair, and loss of interest in life's usual activities; specifier = anxious distress, with mixed features (MDD); includes disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, major depressive disorder single and recurrent episodes, persistent depressive disorder (prev. dysthymia), premenstrual dysphoric disorder, sub/med induced, DD due to another med condition, other specified DD, and unspecified DD; bereavement exclusion removed
anxiety disorders
psychological disorders characterized by distressing, persistent anxiety or maladaptive behaviors that reduce anxiety
