Independent Variable
Variable which is deliberately and systematically manipulated so its effect on the DV can be observed.
Dependent Variable
Factor affected by the manipulation of the IV. The outcome measure.
Confounding Variable
Source of variation not controlled for and causing a systematic effect on the DV, distorting the effect of the IV.
Extraneous Variable
Source of variation that needs to be controlled to avoid it affecting the DV.
