Force and Motion Vocabulary

A Set of Forces and Motion Words for Fifth Grade Science Students that correlate with Battle Creek curriculum
STUDY
PLAY
Force
a push or pull on an object
Gravity
a force where one object pulls on another object, reason why things fall down towards earth
Friction
a force that acts on an object when it rubs against another object or material, reason why many things on earth eventually come to a stop
Inertia
an object at rest tends to stay at rest, an object in motion tends to stay in motion, is the reason why people lurch forward in a car when it is stopped to fast
Unbalanced forces
when all the forces acting on an object change the motion of the object
Balanced forces
when all the forces acting on an object result in the object staying at rest or moving at a constant speed in the same direction
Momentum
It is harder to stop a train than a car because the greater the mass, the more the this it has, As described by a student
Weight
the measure of the amount of gravity pulling on an object
Mass
the amount of matter in an object
Motion
the changing of position of an object
Lever
a board or bar that rests on a turning point (ex. Crowbar, Rake); great for removing a nail
Fulcrum
the turning point of a lever, place that pivots
Speed
a measurement of distance (like feet, miles, or inches) divided by time (like hours, minutes, or seconds); one example is 20 feet in 10 seconds is 20 divided by 10 which is 2 feet per second
Load
an object that a lever moves
Matter
anything that has mass and takes up space
contact force
a push or a pull that touches or comes in contact with an object to change motion
non-contact force
a push or pull that does not touch an object to change motion, examples are gravity, magnetism, and static electricity
variables
the properties of things that can change, be changed, or vary in an experiment
