Function of PDL: Supportive and suspensory
suspends/maintains tooth in its sockets
Function of PDL: Sensory
transmits sensory (tactile pressure) and pain perception
Function of PDL: Formative
provides cells to build cementum and alveolar bone of the tooth socket
Function of PDL: Nutritive
carries blood supply to the cementum and bone
Function of PDL: Resorptive (shock absorption)
acts as a sock absorber transmitting occulusal focrces to the alveolar bone and remodeling of bone
Periodontal Ligament
this connective tissue extends from cementum covering the root surface to the alveolar bone; primarily composed of dense, fibrous, collagen fibers
Principal fibers
dense, fibrous, collagen fibers arranged in bundles and blend into one another that primarily make up the PDL
Cementum
thin, hard layer of hard, mineralized connective tissue covering the tooth root
Two main type of cementum:
cellular and acellular
cementoblasts
derived from the PDL
Functions of the cementum
-anchors ends of PDL
-Protects underlying dentin and seals ends of the open dentinal tubules
-Compensates for tooth wear on occulusal or incisal surface
-cementum continuously deposited, slows with age
Alveolar bone
portion of the maxilla and mandibular that forms and supports the sockets of the teeth
Alveolar consists of:
-60% inorganic material (mineralized)
-25% organic
-15% water
Cortical bone
hard, outside wall of the mandible and maxillae on the facial and lingual aspects, thickest in the molars
Periosteum
thin, connective tissue covering outer surface of the bone, consists of an outer layer of collagenous and an inner layer of elastic fibers (cant see this layer)
