A testable prediction, often implied by a theory
Null Hypothesis
A prediction that there is no difference between groups or conditions. You try to prove it false.
Alternative Hypothesis
The hypothesis that the independent variable causes a difference between two or more groups
Inference
A conclusion based on prior knowledge and experience.
Law
A statement or equation that always predicts events without explanation
Theory
A well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations
Principle
A description of a relationship that can change in different circumstances.
Fact
A statement that can be observed and proved true.
Observation
The act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way.
Independent Variable
The experimental factor that is manipulated and whose effect is being studied.
Dependent Variable
The outcome factor; the variable that may change in response to changes in the independent variable.
Controlled Variable
A factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely keeps the same

The group in an experiment that is not exposed to the treatment for comparison
