How did Mesopotamians change environment to deal with geographic changes?
Rivers provided water and means of travel. They watered crops through floodplain, which deposited silt (fertile soil).
What did Tigris and Euphrates rivers provide to Mesopotamians?
Good, fertile soil for growing crops
More than what people needed -- they were able to trade for things they did need.
A period when not enough precipitation falls. A big drought made it harder to water crops, and if crops failed, people starved.
The flat land bordering the banks. As water spread over the floodplain, the soil it carried settled on the land.

Irrigation -- farmers built canals to carry water from rivers to field. They also built dams to hold back excess water during floods.

Why were priests so important and powerful in Sumerian society?
They were in charge of religious duties, non-religious duties, and gods. Religious duties: They performed rituals and followed religious rules, they worked to satisfy the gods, and they made offerings to the gods. Non-religious duties: They wrote laws, they controlled land ownership, and controlled trade with others. Gods: They believed 4 main gods created the world and ruled it. Each city state had its own god. Also Sumerians had thousands of lesser gods that looked and acted like people - like rich landowners. In summary, priests remained closest to gods; therefore they had the greatest responsibilities and respect of the people. They told people what to believe in.

Egypt to the Nile River. This is where the first farms were developed, the first villages were built, and eventually the first civilizations were founded.
