Fought between the Boers and the British. Many Africans fought with the Boers. The British won in 1910, & established the Union of South Africa (British rule).

Dutch settlers that had controlled South Africa since the mid 1600s; also known as Afrikaners.
Berlin Conference (1884)
European leaders divided Africa between European powers into colonies. No African ruler was invited; by 1914, only 2 independent nations remained (Liberia, Ethiopia).

Interest in or taking land for its strategic location or products. It played an important role in the fate of the Ottoman Empire (Europeans claimed Muslim lands).
Crimean War
Russia vs the Ottoman Empire. Russia sought Ottoman land & access to a warm-water port & access to Black Sea. Britain & France came to aid of the Ottomans. Russia lost, but was still able to take the land. Organized nursing- led by Florence Nightingale.
Suez Canal
Canal built in Egypt to connect the Mediterranean to the Red Sea- created a faster route to Indian Ocean and India. Started by the French, completed by the British.
Sphere of Influence
An area in China that was controlled by foreign trade. An outside power controlled investments and trading.
