AP Human Geo Terms Chapter 2, Key Issue 1
Terms in this set (43)
Population is distributed by examining two basic properties
Concentration and density
What do density measures help geographers explain.
The relationship between the number of people and available resources.
Concentration of the world's population and depicts the sizes of countries according to population rather than land area.
The most important data source for human geographers.
Census is controversial in many countries for two reasons:
Non participation and sampling.
Homeless people, ethnic minorities, and illegal immigrants may be less likely to complete the census form.
Help get a more accurate count, and help identify characteristics of people/houses/businesses.
The four major population clusters are East Asia, South Asia, Europe, or Southeast Asia. (Low lying areas with fertile soil and temperate climate. most near ocean/river rather than interior of landmasses all are in northern hemisphere except part of southeast asia.)
what population of the world lives within 500 km of ocean?
what population of the world lives with 800 km of an ocean
Includes eastern China(5/6 pop of East Asia), Korean Peninsula and islands of Taiwan. Fourth largest country in land area. Chinese population is clustered near Pacific Coast and in several fertile river valleys that extend inland. (mountains and desserts) 1/5 population live here and 2/3 of this population are farmers in rural areas
Nearly 1/5 of the world population lives here, which includes India(second largest country in world with 3/4 of South Asia's pop), Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Most of population is concentrated along the Indus valley and Ganges River. Also in India heavy concentration near Arabian Sea and coastlines. Most people are farmers living in rural areas.
western europe, eastern europe, european portion of russia. 3rd largest population cluster Includes four dozen countries. 75% live in cities and fewer than 20% are farmers. Highest population is near the major rivers and coalfields. (Germany, Belgium, London, and Paris)
Why did europe have so many explorers and desire to colonize
Since europe did not use their land to farm, they need to import food and other resources. By exploring and colonizing they were able to get the imports they needed.
600 million people live here, mostly on a series of islands that lie between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Most people live in island of Java. Clustered along river valley's and deltas (indochina). Most work as farmers in rural areas.
what precentage of the 3 asian population concentrations cover the earth and what portion of the world population does it make up?
1/2 of the worlds population
Largest population concentration in the Western Hemisphere in the northeastern US and southeastern Canada. Largest cluster is in Africa along the coast. Nigeria is most populated in Africa. Most western Africans work in agriculture.
Sparsely Populated Regions
Few people live in places that are too wet, dry, cold, or too mountainous for activities such as agriculture.
Portion of Earth's surface that is occupied by permanent human settlement.
What percentage of the earth surface is populated by 3/4 of the population
5 % with balance of the earth's surface being water(71%)
and less inhabitated land
look at pg 48, 50, 51 and 52 maps.
Areas too dry to farm cover 20% of Earth. Contain natural resources useful to people. (oil reserves) Largest desert region North africa to sw and central asia known as Arabian, sahara, thar takla makan, gobi
Lands receiving high levels of precipitation, located near the equator (may be inhospitable for human occupation). Combination of rain and heat depletes nutrients from the soil and hinders agriculture. rainfall more than 50 inches and at most 90 inches. With seasonal rains or throughout the year enough food can be grown to support large populations
Much of the land near the North and South poles.Receive less rain than the central asia deserts. Unsuitable for planting crops, few animals can survive, and few humans live there.
Highest mountains in the world are steep, snow covered, and sparsely settled. Some are more densely populated, especially at low latitudes where agriculture is impossible at high elevations. ie Switzerland is more than 3300 ft above seal level and only 5% of the country's people live there. If altitudes are high and warm might be more likely to live high up than low where it is uncomfortably hot and humid.
The number of people occupying an area of land.
Formula: population divided by land area. Enables geographers to compare different conditions in different regions of the world. Answers the where question.
Land suited for agriculure
The number of people supported by a unit area of arable land.
high phy den-the greater the pressure that people my place on the land to produce enough food
-insights into the relationship between the size of the population and available resources in a region
Agricultural Density also called population density
The ratio of the number of farmers to the amount of land. Developed countries have lower agricultural densities because technology allows few people to farm.
this density measure helps account for economic differences
How do geographers understand relationships between population and resources in a country?
They examine the country's physiological and agricultural densities together.
what is usa arithmetic density
31 persons per square km or 80 persons per square mile
what is the arithmetic density in bangladesh
2700 person per square mile or 1050 persons per square km
what is the usa physiological density
172 persons per square km or 445 person per square mile of arable land
What is eygpts physiological density
2580 per km or 6682 per mile
What does the large difference in physiological density between usa and egypt mean
demonstrates that crops grown in hectare of land have to feed far more people in eygpt than usa
comparing physiological and arithmetic densities help geographers to understand?
the capacity of the land to yield enough food for the needs of the people.
look at page 52 chart 2-1
usa has low agriculture density and eygpt has a high agricultural density, why?
mdcs have lower agricultural density since technology and finance allow a few people to farm extensive amounts of land and feed many. This frees up people to work in factories, offices, shops etc
Why do geographers study a countrys physiological and agricultural densities together?
to understand the relationship between population and resources in a country
Who can produce more food with limited resources and have the most efficient agriculture system
what are the three largest population clusters in the world
east asia, south asia, and southeas asia
