Unit 3 - Atomic Theory (With Pictures)
Terms in this set (24)
Atom
Consists of a dense, central nucleus containing protons and neutrons that is surrounded by a cloud of electrons
Nucleus
Small, dense, center of the atom that contains most of its mass
Proton
Positively charged particle located in the nucleus
Neutron
Uncharged particle located in the nucleus; the number of these that an atom has is equal to its mass number minus its atomic number
Electron
Extremely small, negatively charged particle located in various energy levels outside the nucleus
Isotope
Atoms that have the same number of protons but different #s of neutrons
Atomic number
The number of protons in an atom's nucleus; the element's "address" on the periodic table
Mass number
The sum of an atoms protons and neutrons
Atom
Made up of three sub-atomic particles (protons, electrons, and neutrons) and is the smallest unit of matter with unique properties of an element.
Electron
A negatively charged sub-atomic particle located in the space around the nucleus.
Neutron
A neutral (no charge) sub-atomic particle locate within the nucleus.
Proton
A positively charged sub-atomic particle located within the nucleus.
Nucleus of an atom
A tiny dense positively charged region in the center of the atom that contains protons and neutrons. This is where most of the mass of an atom is located.
Democritus
Greek philosopher and the first person to propose the idea of an atom.
John Dalton
The Father of the Atomic Theory. His model was a solid ball
Neils Bohr
Discovered that electrons have energy and travel in orbits around the nucleus. We use his model to draw sub-atomic particles of different elements.
Werner Heinsburg
Developed the uncertainty principal and came up with the current atomic model.
quark
particles of matter that make up protons and neutrons
gluons
bind quarks to one another
electrons are a kind of ____________________
lepton
protons are made of these
2 up quarks and one down
neutrons are made of these
2 down quarks and one up
Ion
An atom that gains or loses electrons
Atom
Smallest particle of an element that maintains the same properties as that element
