The misery of the Radley house began when Boo got in trouble with the police after a night of mischief. His father made him a prisoner in his own home.
What do we learn Atticus' profession and what do we learn about him as a father?
Atticus is a lawyer. As a father, he loves his children but isn't a warm and fuzzy dad. He respects his children and treats them as adults.
Who are the Ewells and why are they allowed special privileges?
The Ewells are a family with a lot of kids and their mother died. They are very poor. They live at the dump. Their dad is drunk. They are given special privileges because it is easier to turn a blind's eye.
What compromise does Atticus make with Scout?
Atticus tells Scout if she continues to go to school, he will continue to read with her.
What do we learn the phrase "just a..." comes to represent?
"Just a" represents what a family name means in Maycomb. It is a prejudice because of your name.
what lesson does Cal try to teach Scout?
Cal tries to teach Scout that different isn't bad, it's just different. Also, treat everyone (guests) with respect regardless of their circumstance.
what game to the children make up in chapter 4?
They make up "Boo Radley" based on neighborhood legend and gossip.
What information does Scout give us at the end of chapter 4? what do you suppose was inside the house and what did scout hear?
Scout says that when she crashed into the stoop and popped out of the tire in front of the Radley House she heard someone laughing inside. This was Boo.
Why dose Scout become friends with Miss Maudie?
Because Jem and Dill begin to exclude and ignore her.

his sense of right and wrong is so strict that he punishes boo in a very cruel way.

She calls him a foot-washing baptist, meaning that he takes the bible too literally.

Nathan Radley cemented up the knothole. THis upsets Jem because he had begun to realize this was his only contact with Boo. He is upset for himself and for Boo.
Why is Jem crying at the end of chapter 7?
He is upset because his communication with Boo is gone and he feels bad for Boo.

The snowman represents the African American suppression by the white people.

Miss Maudie's house catches fire. the children are told to stand in front of the radley house to stay safe and away from the fire because the fire might spread.

why is it a sin to kill a mockingbird?
a mockingbird doesn't do anything to harm us - it only makes beautiful music for us. it's a shame to kill anything that is innocent.
why are the children disappointed and ashamed when they compare atticus to other fathers?
he is boring - doesnt do anything that the other fathers do.

he shoots a mad dog with one shot.
why does jem say that they should not tell anyone at school about the incident?
Atticus is modest and humble. he didn't tell the kids because he doesn't want everyone talking about him.
