Terms in this set (24)
plasma membrane
A selectively-permeable phospholipid bilayer forming the boundary of the cells
channel proteins
have a hydrophilic channel that certain molecules or ions can use as a tunnel
receptor proteins
Proteins that transmit information in and out of cells. They allow communication between cells.
fluid mosaic model
Structural model of the plasma membrane where molecules are free to move sideways within a lipid bilayer.
Glycoproteins
Membrane carbohydrates that are covalently bonded to proteins.
phospholipid bilayer
A double layer of phospholipids that makes up plasma and organelle membranes.
polar head
part of the phospholipid that is attracted to water.
nonpolar tails
part of the phospholipid bilayer; they face inside and are hydrophobic (water fearing)
Hydrophilic
water loving
Hydrophobic
Water fearing
Cholesterol
used to stabilize the cell membrane
Phagocytosis
A type of endocytosis in which a cell engulfs large particles or whole cells
Pinocytosis
Cell taking in water
passive transport
Requires NO energy, Movement of molecules from high to low concentration, Moves with the concentration gradient
active transport
Energy-requiring process that moves material across a cell membrane against a concentration difference
simple diffusion
movement of a solute from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
facilitated diffusion
process of diffusion in which molecules pass across the membrane through cell membrane channels
Osmosis
Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
isotonic
when the concentration of two solutions is the same
Hypertonic
when comparing two solutions, the solution with the greater concentration of solutes
Hypotonic
Having a lower concentration of solute than another solution
Aquaporin
protein channels in the cell membrane that water passes through
Sodium Potassium Pump
type of active transport that removes sodium
Receptor Mediated Endocytosis
The uptake of specific molecules based on a cell's receptor proteins

BIOLOGY
You place a frozen pie in an oven and bake it for an hour. Then you take it out and let it cool before eating it. Describe how the temperature of the pie changes as time passes. Then sketch a rough graph of the temperature of the pie as a function of time.
BIOLOGY
For each of the following categories, state one action that will help reduce the impacts of climate change: (a) transportation (b) energy production (e) energy conservation (d) forests
BIOLOGY
(a) What are two possible causes of sea level rise? (b) If the sea level has risen by 20 cm over the past century on the coast of North America, by how much do you think it has risen over the past century on the coast of India? Explain.
BIOLOGY
A scientist discovers a fossilized fish with a body streamlined for fast movement, a large tail fin, and sharp, pointed teeth. What could the scientist infer about the type of food that this fish ate and how it obtained its food? On what evidence is the inference based?
