Political mistake by douglas, south is happy about it.

Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Highly influenced England's view on American deep south and slavery.
Novel Promoting abolition
Fictional, abolitionist novel.
Intensified sectional conflict.
Hero to Northerners.
Abolitionist, white, radical, militant (Was for war, killed slave owners).
Osawatories Massacre, Kansas (1854)
Led an unsuccessful raid at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (Government kept weapons here).
Was hanged due to treason.
Dred Scott Decision
Missouri slave sued for his freedom.
Claimed that his 4 year stay in northern portion of Louisiana Territory made free land by the Missouri compromise made him a free man.
U.S. Supreme Court decided he couldn't sue in Federal Court; said he was "property", not a citizen.
Slavery cannot be regulated by the Federal government.
Attempt to prevent Civil War.
By Senator Crittenden; protect slavery in the south, Lincoln refuses.
Offered a constitutional amendment that recognized slavery in the territories south of the 36*30' line.
Also included noninterference by Congress with existing, and compensation to the owners of fugitive slaves.
Defeated by the Republicans.
Confederate States of America
Formed in 1861.
Composed of 11 Southern States.
Capital -> Alabama, then Richmond Virginia.
Dixie is the National Anthem.
President of Confederate States of America.
Soldier and Statesman.
Paid little attention to collapsing confederate economy.
Former U.S. senator as well as secretary of war, who was currently in Mississippi.
During Civil War.
States between North and South.
Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri and West Virginia.
Were slave states but did not secede.
Robert E. Lee
General of the Confederates.
Was prosperous in many battles.
Defeated at Antietam in 1862 when he treated across the Potomac.
Halt of Lee's troops justified Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
Also defeated at Gettysburg by General Mead's Union troops.
Surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox COurt House: 1865.
Lincolns first choice to lead the Union, though he rejected the offer.
Leading Union General in the American Civil War.

Gained victory for the Union.
First successful victories: Fort Henry and Fort Donelson on Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. (1862)
Greatest victory was Vicksburg.

Were employed by both sides.
The draft (civil war at the time) by congress.
Northerner can pay $300.00 and not go to war.
Included non-citizens (Irish).
Voluntarily then forced in both the North and South.
Nurse and Reformer.
She had organized nursing care for Union Soldiers during the Civil War.
Started the American Red Cross (1880's).
"Angel of the Battlefield."
Applies to state that are rebellious.
Issued by Abraham Lincoln.
1862, after battle of Antiem, January 1st 1863 it was supposed to go into effect.
Declared that all Slaves in the Federate slaves would be free.
Allowed blacks to enlist in the Army.
War now becomes about slavery.
Border states were not affected as they were allowed to keep the slaves since the Union didn't want them to secede.
0 Slaves were free.

At the dedication of a national cemetery on the site of the Battle of Gettysburg.
In the address, Lincoln framed the war as a means to uphold the values of liberty.
Dedicated the speech to the Union and Confederate soldiers who have sacrificed and have taken part in the war.
Group of Northern Democrats.
Opposed the Civil War.
Sympathized with the South during the Civil War.
Obstructed the war effort attacking Abraham Lincoln, the draft, and, after 1863, emancipation.
Wanted an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates.
Copperhead is a deadly snake.
Incident in which a Union Warship stopped a British steamer and removed two confederate diplomats.
Was on its way to England.
james Mason and John Slidell - captured.
Britain prepared for war against the U.S. - sent troops to Canada.
Lincoln decided to release the confederates because he did not want to fight a two front war.
Lincoln said, "Captain of the Union ship acted without orders."

A southern actor and assassin.
Shot President Abraham Lincoln when Abraham was watching "My Little Cousin."
Union war plan.
