Review of Chapter 3: Samuel's Calling and Prophetic Activity

Samuel hears a call three times, and goes to Eli, thinking Eli called him. But Eli said he did not call Samuel. Another time the Lord calls, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel says, understanding it is the Lord, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." The Lord condemns Eli, and when Eli asks Samuel to explain what the Lord spoke, Samuel tells him the truth, "that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever."

Review of Chapter 4: 1. The Ark of God Captured. 2. Death of Eli

1. The Philistines defeat the Israelites in battle, and the Israelites, in panic, wonder why this has happened...and they arrange for the Ark of the Covenant, with the Lord of hosts enthroned on the cherubim, to be brought from Shiloh to their camp for protection. The Philistines, knowing that the Ark has travelled to the Israeli camp, bewail their fate, but, nevertheless, they defeat the Israelites in battle. The Ark of the Covenant is captured, and the sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinheas are killed. 2. Eli is told that his sons have been killed, the Israelites have been defeated, and that the Ark of the Covenant has been captured. With this news, Eli drops over dead!
