What is stroke?
Piston travel from top dead center to bottom dead center or from bottom dead center to top center
Define what cycle means
A repeating series of events
Process approximate to, but not synchronized with, the piston's stroke.
Define "Dead center"
The piston is motionless at either the top or bottom of the stroke
Define "Top Dead Center"
Piston furthest from the crankshaft
Define "Bottom Dead Center"
Piston is closest to the crankshaft
What are the 4-Stroke Engine Events in order?
B. Intake, Compression, Timed Ignition, Power, Exhuast
Define "Intake Stroke"
The intake valve opens as the piston is on its first downward stroke
Define "Compression Stroke"
With both valves closed, the piston is on its first upward stroke
Define "Ignition Event" and what it allows early...
With both valves closes and the piston near the top of its upward stroke, ignition begins approximately 10 degrees BTDC. Ignition is early to allow time for combustion lag
A power event occurs when...
Occurs when burning air/fuel mixture expands from the heat of combustion, increasing the pressure and forcing the piston on its second downward stroke. It ends when the exhaust valve opens at BBDC
An exhaust event occurs when...
Occurs when the exhaust valve opens at BBDC and ends when the exhaust valves closes at ATDC
What is valve overlap?
The length of time at which both valves are open. Occurs at ATDC
What are the disadvantage of valve overlap?
Loss of torque and hp at low rpm and the possibilit of high hydrocarbon (HC) emissions. Note: Many model engines have little or no valve for emission response
What is the cylinder head considered?
Most important part of an engine
Valve Parts: Face
Contact point with the cylinder head
What are the angles of Resurfacing a Valve Seat?
Thirty, Fourty-five, Sixty
What are the types of Springs Rates?
Single, Dual, Progressive
What happens during a single rate?
When there is no change and consist of equally spaced coils
What is a dual rate and what does it provide?
When two sets of unequal spaces coils which provide two rates and a semi-progressive transition
What does a progressive rate allow?
When the rate allows for an infinite number of rates occurring on a gradual transmission
Define "Valve Float"
Related to weak springs, excessive rpm, and springs that are installed incorrectly
What are lifters?
Flat bottom or roller style. They run directly on the camshaft or are stationary in the block
What is a camshaft?
Via a mechanical valve controller, a change rotary motion to reciprocating motion
Define "Camshaft Tensioner"
Fully automatic chain and belt tensioners adjust as the engine is running
Define "Forge Piston"
Square on inside. Note: Smoother insider due to of how they are made & can be used in a 2 and 4 stroke engine
Define "Cast Piston"
Round on inside. Note: Can be used in a 2 and 4 stroke engine
What are ring lands?
Spaces between piston rings. Note: Wear area of the piston
Bottom of piston. Note: Greatest diameter
Define "Cir clip" or "Wrist Pin Retainer"
Must be in line with the connecting rod
Where are oil control rings located and what do they do?
Last ring on the piston and regulate oil in the cylinder
All company's meager in ___ areas besides Suzuki
What can't you use on a bearing?
A magnet or if blue in color engine is overheated
What are the three major moving parts of a 2-stroke
Piston, Connection rod, Crankshaft
Define "Port" and its purpose
Part of a cylinder or crankcase; this controls airflow into and out of engine
All of the area under the piston crown
All of the area above the piston crown
What are the 6 events of a 2-stroke?
Intake, Compression, Ignition, Power, Exhaust, Transfer
What are the 2-Stroke Induction Types?
Piston port, cylinder reed, case reed
What is loop scavenging used on and what are the pistons like?
On modern outboard and pistons are flat
What is cross-flow scavenging used on and what are the pistons like?
On old outboards and pistons are humped
Number 1 Cylinder and Highest Cylinder
On starboard side
Evacuation of spent exhaust gases by the force of incoming mixture
How many revolutions for the 5 events of a 4-stroke?
During port duration, when does symmetrical port timing occuur?
When the port open and close at the same number of degrees from dead center, but in different quandrants
