Gliding
Occurs when relatively flat bone surfaces move back and forth and from side to side with respect to one another. There is no significant change in angle between the bones.
Flexion
Results in a decrease in the angle between articulating bones.
Extension
Results in an increase in the angle between articulating bones.
Lateral flexion
Involves the movement of the trunk sideways to the right or left at the waist. It occurs in the frontal plane and involves the intervertebral joints.
Hyperextension
A continuation of extension beyond anatomical position.
Abduction
Movement of a bone away from the midline.
Adduction
Movement of a bone toward the midline.
Circumduction
The circular (conical) movement of a body part. Combination of flexion, abduction, extension and adduction.
Medial Rotation
A bone revolves around its own axis and the anterior surface of the bone is turned toward the midline.
Lateral Rotation
A bone revolves around its own axis and the anterior surface of the bone is turned away from the midline. (2)
Elevation
An upward movement of a part of the body.
Depression
A downward movement of a part of the body.
Protraction
A movement of the body anteriorly in the transverse plane.
Retraction
A movement of a protracted body part back to the anatomical position.
Inversion
A movement of the soles medially so that they face toward each other.
Eversion
A movement of the soles laterally so that they face away from each other.
Dorsiflexion
Bending the foot at the ankle in the direction of the superior surface.
Plantar Flexion
Bending the foot at the ankle in the direction of the plantar surface.
Supination
A movement of the forearm at the proximal and distal radioulnar joints in which the palm is turned anteriorly or superiorly.
Pronation
A movement of the forearm at the proximal and distal radioulnar joints in which the distal end of the radius crosses over the distal end of the ulna and the palm is turned posteriorly or inferiorly.
Opposition
Movement involving a grasping of the thumb and fingers.
Reposition
Movement involved in releasing an object by spreading the fingers and thumb.
