The Scientific Method- Step by Step
Terms in this set (16)
What is Step 1: Questioning/ Problem?
In this step you- Come up with a question or observation to be tested. It is the question or problem you are going to answer
What is Step 2: Gather Information & Research?
In this step you - Collect information and background information to help you make a prediction.
What is Bias?
This is when a source/person gives a one-sided information or personal prejudice (you must consider the source of the information as well as the information)
What are "Good Questions"?
These are questions that you can collect data on. It is testable.
What is Step 3: Hypothesis?
In this step you- Develop a Hypothesis. An educated guess as to what answer to your question or problem is. This is not a fact. It is testable. The format must be stated= If..... THEN...
What is Step 4: Test your hypothesis?
In this step you- Design and conduct the experiment. You have to come up with the steps to follow the lab & design an experiment or write a procedure. This includes knowing: control group, experimental group, variable, independent variable, dependent variable
What is the control group?
Nothing has changed in this group, the "normal" group
What is the experimental group?
A single factor is changed in this group
What is a "variable"?
A factor that changed in an experiment
What is the "independent variable"?
The factor you have control over and are testing "I Change" (manipulated variable)
ex. the side of the penny
What is the "dependent variable"?
The factor that you measure and record during testing (during the actual experiment). This is usually a number; You do not have control of this. (responding variable)
ex. # of H2O drops in the the penny lab
What is Step 5: Collect Data & Do Experiment?
In this step you - Observe, collect & record data. This is where you are physically running the experiment-
What is "Observation"?
This is when you use one or more of your senses to gather information
What are 2 kinds of observations?
They are: Quantitative--expressed in numbers and
Qualitative-- can not be expressed by numbers, the "look"
What is Step 6: Organize & Analyze Data?
In this step you-Make the data tables & graphs. Draw Conclusions- Figure out what all the data means. Write your answer to your question using your data.
What are "inferences"?
This is a logical conclusion drawn from available evidence and prior knowledge
