testcross
when you dont know the genotype for one parent
-individual of unknown genotype is crossed with a homozygous recessive individual
autosomal dominant trait
only need one copy of the dominant allele to express the phenotype
criteria for autosomal dominant trait
1. males and females affected equally
(can be passed from father to son)
2. males and females transmit the trait with equal frequency
3.successive generations are affected
4.transmission stops after a generation in which no one inherits the mutation
5.DOESNT SKIP GENERATIONS
6.typically cause gain of function mutations
Autosomal recessive trait
need two copies of the trait to be expressed
-occurs in either sex
typically cause loss of function
criteria for autosomal recessive trait
1.males and females can be affected
2. affected males and females can transmit the gene, unless it causes death before reproductive age
3. CAN SKIP GENERATIONS
4.parents of an affected individual are heterozygous or affected
