Tyrant
A ruler who has total power not limited by a constitution or other officials, this person usually seizes power and is an oppressive ruler.
Nobility
The aristocracy, or people in the upper class or high ranks.
City-State or Polis
A self-governing unit made up of a city and its surrounding villages and farmland.
Bureaucracy
An organizational structure that resembles a pyramid, with one person at the top and many people at the bottom. People at each level supervise those in the level below them.
Province
A territory governed as a unit within a country or empire.
Feudalism
An economic system in which nobles own the farmland and peasants work it.
Dictator
A ruler with absolute power and authority and whose word must be obeyed.
Imperialism
The policy and practice of forming and maintaining an empire characterized by the subjugation and control of territories and the establishment of colonies within an ever expanding area.
Republic
A nation in which political power lies with the citizens who elect leaders and representatives. The head of state in this form of government is not a king.
Monarchy
A system of government in which a king, queen, or emperor is the sole and absolute ruler. A ruler is chosen based on heredity rather than election.
Democracy
A system of government in which the people rule, either directly or through their elected representatives.
Empire
A nation and the other nations it has conquered. A political unit often made up of several nations under one leadership.
Dynasty
A series of rulers from the same family.
Oligarchy
A system of government in which a few people rule over the entire population.
Revolution
The overthrow of a government or social system with another taking its place.
