Cells
Building blocks of all organisms
Dominant trait
Stronger trait--hides recessive trait
Nucleus
control center of cell
Recessive Trait
Weaker trait--hidden by stronger trait
Single-cellular organism
Organism made from one single cell (bacteria, amoeba)
Multi-cellular organism
Organism made from more than one single cell (plants, animals, fungi)
Chromosomes
Thin fibers in nucleus. Contain genes.
Genes
Tiny segments of chromosomes. (About 25,000 per regular human cell.)
DNA
(Deoxyribonucleic acid) Material genes and chromosomes made up of.
Punnett square
Model used to predict possible traits in offspring.
Mutation
DNA accidentally damaged or changed so that the genetic message carried by that gene is changed.
Genetic engineering
Doctors or scientists purposefully change an organism's genes.
sexual reproduction
Male and female parts combine to form offspring.
asexual reproduction
Way unicellular organisms make more of themselves--no female and male parts involved.
