Terms in this set (15)
Arc length
The distance from which the electrode is from the base metal while you're welding.
Electrode
Electrodes come either covered with flux, or just bare wire. In the field an electrode is called a "rod" in stick welding, and "wire" for MIG and Flux Cored Arc Welding.
Stinger
What we call the ELECTRODE HOLDER in the shop or field.
Bead
The deposited filler metal on and in the work surface when the wire or electrode is melted and fused into the steel.
GMAW
Gas Metal Arc Welding
SMAW
Shielded Metal Arc Welding
Stringer bead
A type of weld bead made without appreciable weaving motion
Penetration
Is the FUSION or depth into the PARENT METAL from its surface
Flux
Cleans the surface and when burned makes a SHIELDING GAS that protects the weld POOL, or PUDDLE from atmospheric contaminants that cause DEFECTS.
Slag
When the FLUX on a welding ROD melts it produces the SHIELDING GAS to protect the weld, and then forms a hardened protective coating over the weld. This has to be chipped off and thoroughly cleaned, usually by brushing.
Lead angle
The angle formed between the electrode and the work piece.
Coupon
A test piece of metal
Welding
The fusing of two pieces of metal together.
Pad of beads
Stringer beads ran one next to another completely filling the pad
Stick out
How far the wire sticks out from the end of the NOZZLE in MIG welding.

ENGINEERING
Steam is to be condensed on the shell side of a heat exchanger at 75$^\circ{}$F. Cooling water enters the tubes at 50$^\circ{}$F at a rate of 45 lbm/s and leaves at 65$^\circ{}$F. Assuming the heat exxhanger to be well-insulated, determine the rate of heat transfer in the heat exchanger and the rate of condensation of the steam.
ENGINEERING
Showing the details of your work, find φ(f) if f(t) equals: t²sin3t
ENGINEERING
A southwestern city has a contract with Firestone Vehicle Fleet Maintenance to provide maintenance services on its fleet of city-owned vehicles such as street sweepers, garbage trucks, backhoes, and carpool vehicles. The contract price is fixed at $45,000 per year for 4 years. If you were asked to convert the future amounts into constant-value amounts per today’s dollars, what would the respective amounts be? Assume the current market interest rate of 10% per year and inflation rate of 5% per year are expected to remain the same over the next 4-year period.
ENGINEERING
Every process consistent with the conservation of energy and conservation of mass principles can actually occur in nature.
