Properties of Numbers
Terms in this set (14)
Commutative property of addition
The property that states the sum of an addition problem will be the same no matter the order of its numbers.
a + b = b + a
commutative property of multipilcation
a x b = b x a
Factors can be multiplied in any order and the product remains the same.
Associative Property of Addition
The property that states that you can group addends in different ways and still get the same sum.
Associative Property of Multiplication
Changing the grouping of factors will not change the product, (a x b) x c = a x (b x c).
Identity Property of Addition
If you add zero to a number, the sum is the same as that number.
Identity Property of Multiplication
The product of any number and 1 is equal to the initial number. In symbolic form, a x 1 = a. The number 1 is referred to as the multiplicative identity.
Multiplicative Property of Zero
Any number multiplied by zero equals zero
a x 0 = 0
a property indicating a special way in which multiplication is applied to addition of two or more numbers in which each term inside a set of parentheses can be multiplied by a factor outside the parentheses, such as a(b + c) = ab + ac
