Biomes of The World
Terms in this set (18)
a group of land ecosystems with similar climates and organisms
tall trees that form a leafy roof top in the rain forest
found below the canopy, a 2nd layer of shorter trees and vines
an area that receives < 25 cm of rain a year
an area that is populated mostly by grasses and other nonwoody plants
a grassland close to equator receiving as much as 120 cm of rain a year
trees that shed its leaves and grows new ones each year
trees that produce its seeds in cones and has needle-shaped leaves. Also known as pine trees or evergreen trees.
a polar climate region, found across Northern Alaska, Canada, and Russia with short cool summers and bitterly cold winters.
permanently frozen soil found in the tundra climate region.
The 7 main biomes of the world
deciduous forest, desert, boreal forest, tropical rain forest, temperate rain forest, tundra, grassland
Deciduous Forest Biome
warm summers, cold winters; receives at least 50 cm of precipitation per year; trees shed their leaves and grow new ones each year
Hot in daytime, cool or cold at night; very dry; organisms are adapted to extreme temperatures and dry conditions
Boreal Forest Biome
Warm, rainy summers; very cold winters with heavy snow; trees produce cones with seeds that are eaten by many animals
Tropical Rain Forest Biome
Warm temperatures do not vary much throughout the year; very wet and humid; greater variety of species than any other biome
Extremely cold winters, warmer summers; windy; very dry; no trees, only low-growing plants
Receives between 25-75 cm of rain each year; populated by grasses and many large herbivores (plant eating animals)
Temperate Rain Forest Biome
Receive a great deal of rain (more than 300 cm per year) and have moderate temperatures; located in NW region of the US; huge trees grow here.
