smaller number, lower left hand corner
atomic number = no. of protons, no. of electrons
protons
found in the nucleus with positive charge
neutrons
found in the nucleus without charge = neutral;
neutrons = mass no - protons
electrons
found in shells, surrounding the nucleus with negative charge.
electronic configuration
shows electron arrangement in each shell of the atom: 1st shell = 2 electrons
2nd shell = 8 electrons
3rd shell = 8 electrons
Isotopes
atoms of the same element (ie. same proton no.) which have different numbers of neutrons
ions
electrically charged particle formed from gaining or losing electrons
cation
positive ion formed by a metal atom after losing electron(s)
anion
negative ion formed by a non-metal after receiving electrons(s) from a metal.
nucleus
the centre of an atom consisting of protons and neutrons
octet
atom or ion with a full shell of electrons or 8 electrons
