Rough Riders's infantry attack in Cuba. When Spanish tried to escape the American blockaded they were destroyed in a navel battle. Success! Lead to Treaty of Paris.

A treaty between US and Spain. Spain freed Cuba, US purchased the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico turned over to US. End to Spanish American War/ the terms.

De Lome Letter
A private letter written from Spain to US was published. Criticized McKinley, called him weak. Turned Americans to outrage and McKinley ordered USSS Maine to to Cuba to bring American citizens home. Ship blew up.

Paved way for greater American influence in Asia. Wanted traded rights with China, wrote document, bullied way in.
China's Boxer Rebellion
Group of young Chinese who resented foreigners, especially missionaries. Did not support Chinese government so rebelled. Many died but international forces/US put down rebellion.
Panama canal was controlled by Colombia. US incited Panamanians to rebel against Colombia. Then built canal.
US would now use force to protect economic interests in Latin America.
Taft administration policy guaranteed loans made to foreign countries in Latin America.
Had Missionary Diplomacy.
US had moral obligation to deny recognition to any Latin American countries who's countries supported US interest, were democratic, and not hostile.

Villa killed American engineers on a plan. They were leaders of rebellion against Carranza.

Went into Mexico to capture Villa.
