A certain man had two sons, and the younger out of them said to the father,
"Pater, da mihi portionem substantiae quae me contingit."
"Father, give to me the portion of the wealth which is granted to me."
Et divisit illis substantiam.
And he divided the wealth for them.
And not after many days, with all things having been collected, the younger son set out abroad in a distant region
et ibi dissipavit substantiam suam vivendo luxuriose.
And there he squandered his wealth by living luxuriously.
And after he had finished off all of his wealth, a great famine happened in that region, and he himself began to need.
Et abiit et adhaesit uni civium regionis illius;
And he departed and attached himself to one citizen of that region;
And he sent him into his own village so that he could feed his pigs.
And he was desiring to fill up his own stomach from the husks which the pigs were eating, and no one was giving to him.
In se autem reversus, dixit, "Quanti mercennarii patris mei abundant panibus;
However, having been turned around in himself, he said, "How many mercenaries of my father are overflowing with bread;
ego autem hic fame pereo!
I, however, perish here with famine!
I will rise, and I will go to my father, and I will say to him,
'Pater, peccavi in caelum et coram te,
'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you,
et iam non sum dignus vocari filius tuus;
and I now I am not worthy to be called your son;
fac me sicut unum de marcennariis tuis.'"
make me as one of your mercenaries.'"
Et surgens venit ad patrem suum.
And rising he went to his father.
When, however, he was still far away, the father of him saw him,
and he was moved with pity, and running he fell above his neck, and he kissed him.
The father, however, said to his own servant, "Quickly bring forward best robe and clothe that guy,
and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet,
et adducite vitulum saginatum et occidite,
and bring out a fattened calf and kill it,
et manducemus et epulemur, quia hic filius meus mortuus erat et revixit,
and let us eat it and dine on it, because this son of mine was dead and he came back to life,
perierat et inventus est." Et coeperunt epulari.
he perished and he was found." And they began to feast.
Erat autem filius eius senior in agro;
His older son, however, was in the fields;
and when he came and approached the home, he heard music and dancing,
and he called one of the servants and asked what these things were.
Isque dixit illi, "Frater tuus venit,
And he said to him, " your brother has come,
et occidit pater tuus vitulum saginatum, quia salvum illum recepit."
and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he returned safe."
Indignatus est autem et nolebat introire.
He was angered however and was not wanting to enter.
Pater ergo illius egressus, coepit rogare illum.
The father of that guy, therefore, having gone in began to ask him.
At ille, respondens, dixit patri suo, "Ecce tot annis servio tibi et numquam mansatum tuum praeterii,
But that guy responding, said to his father, "Behold, I served you for so many years and i never neglected your command,
et numquam dedisti mihi haedumut cum amicis meis epularer;
and you never gave a goat to me so that i could feast with my friends;
but after this son of yours who wasted his inheritance with prostitutes came,
occidisti illi vitulum saginatum."
you killed the fattened calf for him."
At ipse dixit illi, "Fili, tu semper mecum er, et omnia mea tua sunt;
And that guy said to him, "Son, you are always with me and all my things are yours.
epulari autem et gaudere oportebat,
It was proper however to feast and to rejoice,
quia frater tuus hic mortuus erat et revixit,
because this brother of yours was dead and he came back to life,
perierat et inventus est."
and he was lost and he is found."
