The Beaks of Finches Lab
NY State Lab, Part D of the Regents Exam
Terms in this set (8)
Every group had a different tool to represent the beak, with different characteristics. Tools were assigned, not chosen.
Groups had to compete with each other using the same dish of seeds. Once there is competition, it is more challenging for each group to obtain food.
Each group had to obtain at least 12 seeds to survive
Some tools worked well with the small seeds, others worked better with the larger seeds.
The type of tool and the size of the seeds determined the success of the group
Groups that were not successful with small seeds were able to migrate to a new island with larger seeds
Groups that were not able to feed died out
Beak shape and size
Some beaks are adapted to small seeds, these usually are smaller and pointy. Some beaks are adapted to large seeds, these are usually bigger and thicker. In the lab, the tools provided simulated these differences.
