Wave
A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place
Medium
Material through which a wave travels
transverse wave
A wave that moves the medium in a direction perpendicular, at right angles, to the direction in which the wave travels
compressional wave
matter in the medium moves back and forth along the same direction that the wave travels, also known as a longitudinal wave.
Water waves
transport energy but not water
seismic waves
vibrations that travel through Earth carrying the energy released during an earthquake
crests and troughs
The highest and lowest points of a wave
Rarefaction
a part in a longitudinal wave where the particles are spread apart
Wavelength
Horizontal distance between the crests or between the troughs of two adjacent waves
Frequency
The number of complete waves that pass a given point each second
period
Amount of time it takes one wavelength to pass a point
Amplitude
For a wave or vibration, the maximum displacement on either side of the equilibrium (midpoint) position.
Refraction
The bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from one medium to another
Diffraction
Occurs when an object causes a wave to change direction and bend around it
Interference
the combination of two or more waves that results in a single wave
standing wave
a wave that appears to stand in one place, even though it is really two waves interfering as they pass through each other
Resonance
the process by which an object is made to vibrate by absorbing energy at its natural frequencies
Damping
reducing in extent of effect
tension
stress that occurs when forces act to stretch an object
