axis
one of the perpendicular number lines in a coordinate system; the x-axis (horizontal or across) and the y-axis (vertical or up and down).
bar graph
a graph that compares quantities by showing them as rectangular bars whose heights are the values being compared.
intercept
a coordinate of a point where a line or curve intersects an axis. An x-intercept is the x-coordinate of a point at which a line or curve intersects the x-axis, and a y-intercept is the y-coordinate of a point at which a line or curve intersects the y-axis.
line graph
a data display using points connected by line segments. A line-graph can be used to show how a quantity changes over time.
real numbers
the set of all rational and irrational numbers. Real numbers include rational numbers such as integers fractions, and repeating decimals, and irrational numbers such as n, and other non-repeating decimals.
whole numbers
numbers including positive or negative multiples of 1 and zero
base
a number or symbol that is raised to a power. In the expression 7 to the 4th power, the base is seven.
formula
a rule expressed in mathematical symboles
opposite
a number with the same value but on the other side of zero. The number -2 is the opposite of 2.
power
an expression such as 3 to the 2nd power (or 3 with a little 2 high on the right), where 3 is the base and 2 is the exponent.
value
a number assigned to a variable
symbol
a character that represents a quantity or operation in mathematics
