the molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle
liquid magma that reaches the surface; also, the the rock that forms when liquid lava cools and hardens
a rigid layer of the earth that is made of the uppermost part of the mantle and crust
the innermost layers of the earth's interior characterized by the highest heat energy and radioactive materials
the layer of hot, solid material that flows (called plasticity); located between the outer core and the crust
the movement of heat through a fluid causing a current due to changes in the density of the fluid (warmer, less dense material rises whereas the cooler, denser material sinks).
a deep valley along the ocean floor beneath which older, denser crust slowly sinks back into the mantle (subduction)
a process whereby denser, older crust sinks back down into the mantle as convection currents move the tectonic plates.
an undersea mountain chain where a divergent plate boundary allows new crust to form.
a plate boundary where plates move apart and allow magma to rise, cool, and form new crust.
a boundary where paltes move toward each other and collide. Subduction can happen if the desity of the plates differ. Folded mountains form if the density or the plates are the same.
plates grind past each other at this boundary type. Earthquakes result form the friction and stress.
