How is the flight deck door locking mechanism controlled?
The flight crew controls the door locking mechanism using the COCKPIT DOOR toggle switch on the center pedestal. A mechanical override allows the door to be opened at any time from the flight deck.
When does the flight deck door automatically unlock?
1. if it is electrically not powered.
2. if the pressure sensor detects a depressurization.
An escape panel in the flight deck door can be used to evacuate the flight deck in an emergency. How is this panel removed?
The escape panel is only removable from inside the flight deck. It is removed by pulling two quick-release pins installed on each side of the panel.
Can a crew member gain access to the flight deck from the cabin when the flight deck door is locked?
Yes, using the keypad located outside the flight deck door. After the access code has been entered, a buzzer will sound in the flight deck for two seconds. The flight crew then move the COCKPIT DOOR selector switch to UNLOCK. The flight deck door is unlocked and a green light on the keypad illuminates.
Can a crew member gain emergency access to the flight deck from the cabin when the flight deck door is locked?
Yes. An emergency access code is entered into the keypad. The buzzer sounds for 45 seconds. The OPEN light flashes. The green light flashes. After 45 seconds the door unlocks for 5 seconds and the green light illuminates steady.
Can the flight deck crew override the flight deck door emergency access entry?
Yes by momentarily moving the COCKPIT DOOR selector switch to LOCK. The LOCK mode is activated for 15 minutes. Once the LOCK mode times out, the system returns to normal operation. The normal mode can be re-energized at any time by momentarily selecting UNLOCK on the COCKPIT DOOR selector.
Is there a flight deck indication to show if the forward lavatory is occupied?
Yes. TOILET indicator illuminates "OCCPD"
