Cell
Basic unit of life
function
what something does
Multicellular
Made up of more than one cell.
Organ
A collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function
Organism
A living thing
Specialized
Having characteristics that allow specific functions to be performed
Subsystem
a self-contained system within a larger system.
System
A group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements or parts that function together as a whole to accomplish a goal.
Tissue
A group of similar cells that perform the same function.
What three things does the circulatory system deliver to every
cell in your body?
Takes waste away from cells, takes oxygen, food and water to the cells, helps fights infections
How many parts does the circulatory system have?
The heart pumps blood throughout your entire body
How big is your heart
the size of your fist
Your lungs are made to help you deal with two types of gases:
oxygen and carbon dioxide. Which of these two gases do the
lungs give to your blood and which do they take away?
Lungs give oxygen to your blood.
Lungs take carbon dioxide away from your blood.
Do arteries carry blood to the heart or away from the heart?
Away from the heart
What do you call thin tubes that connect arteries to veins?
Capillaries
Do veins carry blood to the heart or away from the heart?
To the heart
circulatory system
Circulates blood through the body; supplies body cells with oxygen and nutrients and removes waste
respiratory system
supplies the blood with oxygen;
Muscular System
gives shape to the body and allows the body to move
nerveous system
Send and receives impulses
exceretory system
Filters fluids from the body
digestive system
Breaks down food
What structures make up tissues?
Groups of cells form tissues
What is the order of the cards (body systems) from the most specific to the most general?
Cells
Tissues
Organs
Organ system
Systems
Organism
Describe what body systems are composed of.
Composed of organs
How is the body a system of multiple interacting subsystems
The human body has 6 systems that must work independently and together.
They are:
-Digestive system
-Nervous system
-Skeletal system
-Respiratory system
-Circulatory system
-Muscular system
How does the circulatory help the excretory system and the digestive system do their jobs?
Circulatory/ excretory= washes cells to the kidney(s)
Circulatory/digestive= transports nutrients to the cells
What does the skeletal system do?
provides a framework/structure for the body and helps protect it
What does the Intergumentary system do
An organ system consisting of skin, hair, nails, and it protects the body from the outside world and protects the deeper tissues in the body
What are the organs of the circulatory system?
heart, arteries, veins, capillaries
What are the tissues of the circulatory system?
nervous, connective, epithelial, and muscle tissue
What are the organs of the nervous system?
Brain, spinal cord and nerves
What are the tissues of the nervous system?
Nervous tissue
What are the organs of the respiratory system?
Lungs, bronchi,
What are the tissues of the respiratory system
Epithelial
What are the organs of the digestive system
Esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum and anus
What are the tissues of the digestive system
Smooth muscle, epithelial and connective tissues
What are the organs of the skeletal system
Bones
What are the tissues of the skeletal system
Connective tissue
What are the organs of the muscular system
muscles
What are the tissues of the muscular system?
muscle tissue
What is a one celled organism called?
unicellular
How many cells does the human body have
Over 100 trillion
Examples of single-celled organisms
Bacteria and yeast
Describe muscle cells
Long to allow for contraction
Describe nerve cells
tend to have many branches
What is the function of red blood cells?
carry oxygen from the lungs to other cells in the body
What is the shape or red blood cells and why?
Flexible to squeeze through narrow blood vessels
What do white blood cells do?
Help fight off infection
What do platelets do?
help blood clot
What is bone marrow and what does it do?
It is a type of bone cell that helps create blood
Describe stomach muscle tissue and what it does
Smooth tissue; helps churn food and break it down into smaller pieces
What is epithelial tissue?
It's found on the surface of organs and lines the inner spaces of organs.
What is the main function of epithelial tissue
Protection, secretion (producing and releases materials) and absorption (taking in materials)
What does nervous do?
senses stimuli from the environment and sends signals throughout the body
What does connective tissue do?
It holds together structures in the body; connective tissue includes bones and fat
What is the largest organ in the body?
The skin
How does the heart pump blood?
By repeatedly contracting and relaxing.
Where do oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange?
In the lungs in the alvioli sacs
What is the basic function of a muscle?
Is to contract
`How are muscles attached to bones
By tendons
What systems work together to move the body?
Muscular, skeletal and nervous systems
Where do muscles get the energy to contract?
From carbohydrates digested in the digestive system and oxygen from the respiratory system
What happens to material that can't be digested by the digestive system?
It is passed through as waste
Where does digestive system begin?
Mouth - saliva and teeth start to break down food
What pushes the food into the stomach
The esophagus
What system coordinates all other systems in the body?
The nervous system
What is the central nervous system (CNS) ?
consists of the brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)?
consists of the complex network of nerves throughout the body and controls things like breathing, heart rate and digestion
What is the excretory system?
Removes waste from the body
What organs remove waste from the blood?
Kidneys
What is the waste from kidneys called
Urine
