Complexity and Contradiction: Politics and the Postmodern/ 1492/1992: Identity and (Post-)Coloniality
Terms in this set (12)
Richard Hamilton Just What Is It that Makes Today's Homes So Different, So Appealing? 1956 PO: England (?)
Represents Hamilton really examining American "forms" and rejecting their version of modernism. Refers to American consumerism/pop culture/desire and posits America's embrace of consumerism as being truly representative.
Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown Gothic Revival Chair 1979-1984 PO: US (?)
Shifts the focus of design to the surface, and not form/material (goes against the Eames for example). More interested in hybrid, ambiguous elements (of the "both/and" coexisting together).
Alessandro Mendini, Proust Armchair (Bau-Haus Collection) 1979 PO: Italy
Mendini also focused on the surface here, on overwhelming the viewer by ornament. The surface design is of a old pointillism painting, about "Remembrance of Things Past" (chair becomes something about memory)
Ettore Sottsass Casablanca Sideboard 1981 PO: Italy
Of the Memphis Group. Themes: Function and utility come second. Made of cheap materials that highlight the surface. Designs that are "polysemic"- there is a breakdown of any hierarchy in use/function. As a result- no claim of truth like a "universal form" nor lofty message nor logic- just cartoon-like
Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood Anarchy Shirt 1976 PO: England (?)
Design works on a playful focus on visual references to history (Karl Marx, Nazi Eagle) in order to represent a heavy attack on the mainstream and upturning loaded symbols like Marx and the Nazis- undermines meanings and power.
Cabaret Voltaire Posters (?)
Visual style/content inspires others (like the punk style (?)) as a representation of the embrace of capitalistic constraints, and as an examination of working class reality.
Guillermo Gomez-Pena and Coco Fusco The Couple in the Cage 1992 PO: (?) (International Performance)
Pena and Coco commenting on the lack of resolution to the legacy of Columbus's traumatic "discovery" of the Americas and the practice of displaying and touring indigenous people by satirizing it in their performance. Almost becomes a performance on the audience as they demonstrate problematic behavior themselves.
Daniel Martinez Museum Tags 1993 PO: NYC, US (Whitney Biennial)
Was given to Biennial attendees. Implicates the audience- forces them to become labels and calls attention to the demographics of the largely white audiences. Plays with language- the hierarchies of indoctrinated thinking ("good to be white").
Glenn Ligon untitled ("I feel most colored") 1992 PO: US
Piece also plays with language. Visualizes the breakdown of language into abstraction and complicates voice and authorship. (Who is speaking here? The piece? Ligon? The original speaker of the quote?)
Byron Kim Synecdoche 1991-present PO: US (?)
Synecdoche- "a part is made to represent the whole". Here the skin tones of different people are used to represent communities, blurring between what is representation and abstraction.
Fred Wilson Mining the Museum 1992-93 PO: Maryland, US
Directly challenging the burying of America's troubled history with slavery and colonization by the Maryland Historical Society (by placing slave shackles with silver goblets and labeling as the same). Forcing the audience to confront all of the history and the narratives surrounding them.
Enrique Chagoya Tales from the Conquest/Codex 1992 PO: Mexico
Work remixes a lot of source material from Superman comics to early colonial and pre-colonial art. Example of "reverse-modernism" where Chagoya is appropriating European modernism like Picasso did with African masks. Comments on the absurdidty of colonial encounters and cultures.
