What are some complications when taking Furosemide (Lasix) and Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)?
Dehydration, hyponatremia, hypotension, ototoxicity, hypokalemia
What does Lasix do?
Blocks the reabsorption of sodium and chloride and prevents reabsorption of water. It is a loop diuretic.
What would you take Lasix for?
Pulmonary Edema, hypertension, edema due to liver, cardiac or kidney disease
What lab work do you need to monitor when you take Lasix and HCTZ?
Electrolyte imbalance. Mainly potassium, sodium and chloride
Nursing care for Lasix and HCTZ?
Patient should be weighed every day in the morning, Check blood pressure, monitor I&O and report increase or decrease of weight 2 pounds a day or 5 pounds in a week
How do you know when Lasix and HCTZ are working?
Decrease in pulmonary Edema, weight loss, decrease in blood pressure, increase in urine output
What does hydrochlorthiazide (HCTZ) do?
Blocks the reabsorption of sodium and chloride, prevents reabsorption of water and promotes diuresis when kidney function is inadequate
What is spironolactone (Aldactone)?
potassium sparing diuretic
What is Spironalactone used for?
Heart failure and hypertension
What is the major difference between ARB's and ACE inhibitors?
ACE inhibitors can give you a cough and a hyperkalemia and a ARB's will not.
What is angioedema?
swelling of the tongue and throat. Life threatening complication from taking an ARB or ACE
What are the side effects for ACE inhibitors?
First dose orthostatic hypotension, cough, hyperkalemia and Angioedema.
What are the contraindications for ACE inhibitors?
Pregnancy, having one kidney or a kidney impairment
What are the contraindications for ARB's?
Pregnancy, renal stenosis and a patient who is had angioedema from taking an ACE inhibitor
What is the mechanism of action for an ACE inhibitor?
Vasodilation, excretion of sodium and water and retention of potassium by actions in the kidneys
