circuits
A closed path through which electrons flow. Whenever negative charges have a way to get to the positive charges, we have a circuit.
How to make a circuit
need a source of charge, like a battery or an outlet in the wall, and a conductor for the charge to move through, like a wire.
types of circuits
SERIES CIRCUIT
PARALLEL CIRCUIT
Series Circuit
A circuit where the current has only one path it can travel along
parallel circuit
A circuit where the current has more than one path it can travel along
current
is a measure of the magnitude of the flow of electrons in a circuit.
Any time that electrons move, we get what is called a current.
How electrical currents flow
Electrical current flows from places of higher potential energy to places of lower potential energy (i.e. from positive to negative).
example of currents
Current would be how much water (or electricity) is flowing past a certain point. The higher the amperage, the more water (or electricity) is flowing.
Current follows the path of ______________ resistance
least
The amount of current going into any point in a circuit is the ___________ as the amount coming out of that point.
same
RESISTANCE
measure of a material's ability to oppose the flow of electricity
CONDUCTOR
materials through which electrical current moves freely
INSULATOR
materials which prevent the flow of electricity
VOLTAGE
measure of the electrical energy of a circuit
Think of a geyser as _________ voltage, and the shower of a an apartment on the fifth floor as ______ voltage
high, low
In any given circuit, the total voltage around the path of the circuit is ________.
zero
Each component that offers a resistance ___________ the voltage, and by the time we reach the _______ of the circuit loop, there will be no current left.
lowers; end
