Compare and contrast Eve and Mary. Include the Protoevangelium in your answer.
Both created sinless and asked to do God's will, and both are the woman. Eve's no brings sin and death for all. Mary's yes brings redemption. Protevangelion: promise of how things will be reversed. Mary is the New Eve. God promises "descendant of Mary will crush the serpent.". Mary will undo what eve did.
What is salvation history? What is a covenant, what does it involve, and how do they play a part in salvation history?
Salvation history is the story of God's plan to save man from the consequences of sin. A covenant is a binding and solemn agreement between God and a particular person, people, or nation involving mutual commitment and guarantees/promises. In the covenant of God, they require mutual promises. Covenants were used to bring the people closer to god and prepare them for the coming of Christ.
What is a "Gospel" and why are four preserved? How does the lineage of Jesus reflect the importance of preserving all four?
A gospel is the "good news", and it is the documented recordings of the Paschal Mystery (life, death, and resurrection) of Jesus Christ. All four (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) Gospels tell the same story but portray it in a different way/different perspectives. Seen through the example of the lineage. It is shown in Luke and Matthew. Luke's lineage shows us that Jesus is the new Adam. Matthew traces back to Abraham (father of Jewish people) and Luke traces back to Adam (father of all). Matthew wants people to know Jesus is really Jewish, while Luke wants us to know Jesus is coming for all people.
Explain how the authorship of Scripture works: who are the authors and what do they contribute?
God is the primary author but also human authors. God worked through several types of people (not like a robot) so everyone gives a different perspective using their experiencing upbringing and life in general. He encourage the human authors to write what they want to write (divine inspiration). Because God is the primary author, it was inerrant.
What is the Deposit of faith and what is contained in it? How specifically does the Magisterium relate to the Deposit of Faith?
Deposit of faith is everything God has revealed. It contains two things: sacred tradition (lived in the life of the church) and sacred scripture (written). Magisterium is the teaching authority of the church NOT CONTAINED IN DIVINE REVELATION. Deposit of faith is what is being taught and passed down by the magisterium. The magisterium teaches, protects, and passes down the deposit of faith.
What do we learn about the human person in Genesis 1 and in Genesis 2. How can you characterize our relationship with God and the rest of creation before the Fall?
In Genesis 1, we learn that M&W were created at the same time, equality with each other, free will, rational soul, can think intelligently, they are the culmination of all creation because they are on the last day and have dominion over creation, created in image and likeness of God (IMAGO DAI). In Genesis 2, we see equality through the rib and creation is international and personal. Woman is the true companion (seen through the rib). Man (Adam) has dominion over all creation because he names Eve (woman). We can characterize our relationship with God and creation through original holiness is (the connection between Adam, Eve, and God) and Original Justice is (connection between Adam, Eve, and creation).
Describe the Fall in Genesis 3: specify what the sin was and why it was sinful. List the curses that are received after the Fall.
The sin was sinful because Eve went directly against God's word and disobeyed him. The world went from being beautiful and pure to being ashamed and wrong (all innocence was destroyed). The serpent made Eve suspicious of God which suggested that god was false. Adam and Eve had to choose between believing God and believing the serpent. This was a "sin of pride". The curses were that snake has to crawl on its stomach, woman has pain during birth, man has power over woman, man has to work for food, and man will die.
Curses:
-snake crawl on stomach
-Woman has pain during childbirth
-Man has power over woman
-Man has to work for food
-Man will die
Consequences:
-lost friendship w/ God
-Suffer and Die
-Inclined to sin
-Sin and death in world
What is Original Sin (include its two senses)? Connect to the consequences of the sin of Adam and Eve.
Original sin is the sin of disobedience committed by Adam and Eve that resulted in their loss of original holiness and original justice and their becoming subject to sin and death. Also describes the fallen state of human nature into which all generations of people are born. Christ Jesus saved humanity from original sin and baptism restores out original holiness but not original justice. The two sense are original sin for Adam and Eve (the actual, personal sin that Adam and Eve committed when they disobeyed God's command) and Original sin for their descendants(not an actual sin but a state in which human nature is).
What important information about Jesus's identity AND mission are revealed at the Annunciation and in the Nativity accounts? Be precise.
The angels message to Mary: told her that she would bear the son of God and the son will reign over a kingdom with no end. God designating Jesus' name points to the significance of his identity and mission. The angel mentions Jesus as the Son of God twice, stressing his divinity. He will be both the son of God and Mary and will have 2 natures: fully divine and fully human. Mary's response to the angel was "Fiat" which means let it be done (1:38).
Who is Moses and what does he do? Be sure to incorporate the important event of the burning bush and what is revealed there.
Moses was a baby who was sent down the Nile river to be safe from the Egyptian pharaoh, who's master plan was to kill all baby boys. Moses fled Egypt after killing an Egyptian man who beat a Hebrew slave. He ended up in the land of midian. Two things were revealed at burning bush: his name (I am who I am/Yahweh), and Moses' mission, which was to liberate the chosen people oppressed by the Egyptians.
Describe the Sinai Covenant. What are the 3 elements of this covenant? How do the 10 Commandments fit into this covenant?
"I will be your God, and you will be my people." The three elements were bound God and the people in loving union, reveals God's special love for his chosen people, and the people would respond in love by following God's commands. The 10 commandments fit into this covenant because they summarize the laws that God have Moses on Mt. Sinai. They are a guide for Israel to keep the covenant, moral law given to Israelites, and describes the proper relationships they were to have with God and with each other.
Explain the difference between Natural and Divine Revelation. Provide examples of what can only be known by Divine Revelation. What can be known about God by Natural Revelation (Use the 5 Ways or Contemplating the Human Person)?
Natural revelation is the knowledge of the existence of God and his basic attributes that can be derived by human reason, while reflecting on the created order. Divine revelation is the knowing of God's existence and his attributes that is beyond our natural capacity to know, but what God makes known to us/reveals to us. Christians believe that God has revealed two things in history: who he is and his plan for salvation. We know WHO God is and the ability to reason. God reveals himself through divine revelation through the holy trinity (father, son, Holy Spirit). The 5 ways are: God is the Unmoved Mover, God is the First Cause, Everything Comes from something, and God is that Something, God is the Supreme Model, and God is the Grand Designer.
Make at least 3 connections of the Old Testament and Jesus. One of these connections must be with Passover. Explain each.
The Old Testament tells of God's revelation before Christ and distinguished the promises God made with Jewish people and the new ones he makes with Christ (same as Jesus because humans connect with Christ too). This connects to Jesus because during Passover, the Israelites spread lamb blood on their doorposts and it reminded the chosen people of God's unconditional love, which is the same as Jesus because he is trying to keep us safe from evil (Egyptians during Passover) and closer to God.
