Biblical Examples of Pride Chapter 3
Terms in this set (48)
In this chapter
we will study some Biblical examples of pride
how pride works
why God hates pride
13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
*5 Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
Our 1st example
we see spiritual pride in Cain in Genesis 4
God said what kind of sacrifice was required of Cain and Abel
blood from a lamb
because of sin
Cain disobeyed however
What kind of sacrifice did Cain bring to God?
fruit of the ground
this is pride exalting itself against the knowledge of God
this doesn't deal properly with Cain's sin either
Spiritual pride in the rich young ruler from Mark 10
The rich young ruler asked Jesus how to have eternal life?
Jesus showed him the law. Remember what the law does? Romans 3:20?
The rich young ruler in his spiritual pride says he has observed them since his youth.
The spiritual pride of the rich young ruler deceived him into thinking he had not

11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. *12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess
The Pharisee in this parable exhibits
Pride made this Pharisee proud of himself
rather than showing him his true need of God
for the pharisee
"I" was on the throne
If you have spiritual pride
make confession of it to God today
You may be delivered from it by the blood of Jesus Christ
*9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
1 John 1:9
2nd example of pride
the pride of ambition
we see prideful ambition in Adam and Eve
when they sought to be like gods and to know the difference between good and evil. Pride blinded their hearts as they committed an act of atrocity. The sin that would change the course of human history.
*5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
*6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
In Numbers 16 we see the pride of ambition in Korah, Dathan, and Abiram who blinded by pride aspire to be high priest
God consumed them in His wrath opening the earth, so that they went alive down into hell.
God sovereignly withheld them from being high priest but in their pride they persisted in aspiring to it
turn from the pride of ambition
and seek God through Jesus Christ our Lord
*5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD:
pride of position
*2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.
Out of pride in position
Pharoah and the unregenerate sinner of today say
Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice?
Why should I bow to His authority? Why should I deny my self anything that I want? Why do I need help from God?
In 2 Kings 5 Naaman because of his pride of position
almost went to hell because he would not consent to dipping 7 times in the Jordan river in obedience to God's command
Naaman was a leper. He sought Elisha, who was God's servant, for healing.
But when he heard the terms he went away in a rage because of his pride of position. He would have one to hell had, a soldier not talked him into obeying.
Another example of pride of position
King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, in Daniel 4. His heart was lifted up and his mind was hardened in pride.
What happened to Nebuchadnezzar?
He was humbled. He lost his throne and his pride. He was made to roam the fields eating grass like an ox for 7 years.
in Daniel 4:35,37
we say what Nebuchadnezzar says afterwards
*35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
*37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
One reason pride is very unreasonable is
because all that we have comes from God. We are creatures of His hands. He is the Potter and we are the clay.
*6 The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
*7 The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
*8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them.
*9 He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
1 Samuel 2:6-9
10 The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.
1 Samuel 2:10
If we are saved
It is because of God's grace
if we have any good thing
it is a gift from above
if we have a spiritual gift
it is because of the Holy Spirit
even the will to do what God wants
is worked in us by the Holy Spirit according to His good pleasure
if we have eyes to see spiritual truth
it is because of the Holy Spirit
*5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
2 Corinthians 3:5
Anything above the grave is by
if we are drawn to God
it is because He draws us
if we are saved
it is because of His faithfulness
if we are cleansed of our sins
it is because of His blood
it is His righteousness
that clothes His children
it is His power
that keeps His children
it is His goodness
that leads sinners to repentance
All that God has for His people
is from the Father
through the Son
by the Holy Spirit
We are only complete
in Jesus Christ
let us only boast of Him and His cross
and never boast of ourselves as if we were the reason for anything good and spiritual
