Terms in this set (21)
parallel lines
coplanar lines that do not intersect
skew lines
Lines that do not intersect and are not coplanar
Transversal
a line that intersects two or more lines
alternate interior angles
angles between 2 lines and on opposite sides of a transversal
Note: 5 and 6 are alternate interior angles; 7 and 8 are also alternate interior angles
WHEN THE TWO LINES ARE PARALLEL, ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES ARE CONGRUENT
same side interior angles
two interior angles on the same side of the transversal
WHEN THE TWO LINES ARE PARALLEL, SAME SIDE INTERIOR ANGLES ADD UP TO 180 degrees
corresponding angles
Angles in the same place on different lines
WHEN THE TWO LINES ARE PARALLEL AND THE ANGLE IS CREATED BY A TRANSVERSAL (like this picture), CORRESPONDING ANGLES ARE CONGRUENT
triangle
a figure formed by three segments joining three noncollinear points (a three-sided polygon)
vertex
A point where two or more straight lines meet.
Also: the corner or point where two sides of a triangle, rectangle, or other a polygon meet
side
segments that form a polygon
scalene triangle
a triangle with no congruent sides
isosceles triangle
a triangle with at least two congruent sides
THE ANGLES ACROSS FROM THE CONGRUENT SIDES WILL ALSO BE CONGRUENT
equilateral triangle
A triangle with three congruent sides
THE ANGLES OF AN EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE ARE ALSO ALL CONGRUENT
acute triangle
A triangle with 3 acute angles
obtuse triangle
a triangle with one obtuse angle
right triangle
a triangle with one right angle
Remember: a right angle is a 90 degree angle.
equiangular triangle
A triangle with 3 congruent angles
IN A TRIANGLE WITH THREE CONGRUENT ANGLES, THE SIDES WILL ALSO ALL BE CONGRUENT.
An equiangular triangle is also an equilateral triangle.
interior angles of a polygon
angles inside of a polygon
exterior angle of a polygon
an angle formed by a side and an extension of an adjacent side
polygon
A closed figure formed by three or more line segments
convex polygon
a polygon such that no line containing a side of the polygon contains a point in the interior of the polygon
diagonal
(geometry) a straight line connecting any two vertices of a polygon that are not adjacent
