How long does it take mosquito eggs to hatch?
Some in 1-2 days, some take years or can overwinter.
How many times will a mosquito blood feed?
1-5 times over lifespan (7-28 days)
List the three types of mosquitoes by habitat.
1) Floodwater mosquitoes
2) Permanent water mosquitoes
3) Container mosquitoes
Floodwater mosquitoes include which genera?
large populations in Spring and early Summer
What floodwater mosquito can be found in New Orleans?
Permanent water mosquitoes include which genera?
Anopheles, Coquillettida, Mansonia, some Culex
What do mosquitoes need in permanent water?
- Fresh water with sunlight and surface vegetation.
- Shallow edges.
What contributes to the development of permanent water mosquitoes?
- *Mismanaged ponds
- Excessive vegetation
- Stagnant water
- Lack of predators
Container breeding mosquitoes include which genera?
Aedes, some Culex
List six components of integrated pest management.
2) source reduction
4) biological controls
6) public education
How does the landing rates method word, and what are its advantages?
- Number of mosquitoes to land on a person in one minute.
- Consistent and quick to perform.
- Puts the person at risk of disease exposure.
How does a NJ light trap work?
- A light attracts mosquitoes and a ran draws them into a container.
- Requires a power outlet. Many species attracted to light.
How does a CDC miniature light trap work?
Like a NJ light trap with two exceptions.
1) 6V battery
2) dry ice for CO2 instead of light
How does a gravid trap work?
Same as a CDC miniature light trap, but replaces dry ice for hay or fish oil (attracts gravid Culex).
How does a BG sentinel trap work?
Contrasting black/white used with lures & CO2 to attract Aedes aegypti/albopictus.
How is a breeding site inspection done?
Dip a cup into a body of water. Count the larva per dip.
What are common larval habitats in New Orleans?
Drainage ditches, standing water at drains, puddles in lowlands.
How is an ovitrap used for egg survey?
LBJ (little black jars/cups) are filled with seed germination paper and a paddle. Collects container-breeding mosquitoes. Rear in lab to count and ID.
How can fish be used as a biological control?
Top minnow, killifish can be used.
- Gambiusa affins used most often.
---Survives a wide range of habitats.
---Wide temperature range.
---Controls mosquitoes rapidly.
-Broad diet ensures survival when larvae are not present.
What turtles are used as biological controls?
Red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans)
What species of copepods are used as biological controls?
What are advantages of copepods?
- Voracious predators of 1st instar larva.
- Good in habitats too small for fish (tires).
- Convenient, cheap, easy to transport (backpack sprayer).
What species of Toxorhynchites are best for biological control?
List three types of chemical controls.
When and how are adulticides administered?
- To 34 zones between 9-11PM (peak activity).
- By truck and plane.
How is resistance monitoring performed?
What are three types of larvacides?
- Bacterial (Bti, B. sphaericus)
- IGR (growth hormones- methoprene)
- surface oils (Coco Bear)
