genre
A category or type of literature
Nonfiction
Writing that is factual, not creative or fictional. Can also be called "informational material".
fiction
A story that is not true or is made up
myths
Stories that people tell to explain beliefs about their world. Form part of the traditional knowledge of a society.
biography
story of a person's life written by another person
realistic fiction
A story using made-up characters that could happen in real life.
fable
A brief story that leads to a moral, often using animals as characters
autobiography
An account of a person's life written by that person
fairy tales
Often feature a fight between good and evil.
Stories that involve unrealistic characters like fairies, and usually have a happy ending
historical fiction
fiction set in the past where we learn about the everyday life of a person
science fiction
fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets.
mystery
Usually a crime has been committed and the reader wants to try to figure it out.
traditional fantasy
One example is "Cinderella".
Stories and tales handed down from long ago that have no known author; When they were finally written down, it was by "collectors" rather than authors. Some fairy tales are traditional fantasy.
modern fantasy
Outside the realm of possibility but set in modern times. We can live in an imaginary world where anything is possible.
fantasy
The author has created a magical world where anything is possible.
legends
a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but unauthenticated.
folktales
A fairy-tale type story coming from spoken tradition.
horror story
a story that entertains people by frightening them
thriller
has an exciting plot, usually involving crime or espionage
dystopian
a futuristic society that seems perfect, but really is not
