Dictatorship
Total government control - the leader has complete control and harsh punishments can be issued
Monarchy
The leader/ruler inherits his or her power (passed through families)
Democracy
Government where citizens hold political power either DIRECTLY or through ELECTED representatives.
Parliamentary democracy
Type of representative democracy where the head of government is a member of the legislature (Prime Minister)
Oligarchy
a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution.
Theocracy
System of government run by religious leaders, religious rules are the laws of the country.
Autocracy
Type of government run/controlled by a single person. Examples: monarchy, dictatorship

Federalism
A system in which power is divided between the national and state governments

A military or political group that rules a country after taking power by force.

Theory that people were forced to submit to an individual's rule
Divine Right Theory
This is the belief that God chose the ruler and that the ruler must only answer to God
Social Contract Theory
The belief that the people agree to set up rulers for certain purposes and thus have the right to resist or remove rulers who act against those purposes.
