Chem 111 Pre-Lab Quiz 1
Terms in this set (12)
What is meant by small scale chemistry as it applies to lab instruction?
all investigations only require a small amount of matter, which serves to save experimental materials.
What are the advantages to the small scale approach to lab instruction?
safer, saves time, space, money and waste, allows for open ended experimentation by the student and for the teacher to make creative assignments.
Your Chem 111 grade is based on three components. What are they? What are the
weightings of each of these components?
The components are the Lab Notebook (50%), Pre-Lab Quizzes (20%), and Final Exam (30%).
The quiz weighting on Canvas will be set to 50% for most of the semester, even though
this isn't the correct weighting. Why is this being done?
makes tracking progress on the pre-lab quizzes easier; the pre-lab quiz score are a good indicator of performance on the Final.
how close a result comes to the true value (how close to the center of the bull's eye)
Was the calibrated weigh set used to measure the accuracy or the precision of a balance?
precision because we wanted to see how close the values that the balance would come up would be between trials of the same objects.
Know what the numbers are in each of the three colored diamonds on a bottle of ethanol.
Also know what these numbers are telling you.
Red (Flammability): 3 (Quite flammable)
Blue (Health Hazard): 2 (Moderate Health Hazard)
Yellow (Reactivity): 0 (Not reactive)
How is distilled water made?
boiling water tap water and condensing the steam into a clean container, which reliquifys as distilled water.
Outline the process for the disposal of liquid waste in Chem 111.
1. Get personal waste container from large fume hood.
2. Squirt distilled water onto the reaction mixtures on reaction surfaces and use plastic pipets to suck up the liquid and then eject it into the waste container.
3. Pat down reaction surface with micro wipe or paper towel.
4. Eject liquids into red waste container in fume hood, rinse waste container with ethyl alcohol, transfer that liquid into red waste container, and then rinse personal waste container with distilled water and flip over on absorbent padding in fume hood.
how close two or more measurements are to each other (how close each shot is from the other)
What is the main reason why it is more expensive than tap
it requires more energy/equipment to produce than ordinary water
Why do chemists often use distilled water?
they are interested in the purest form of water during experimentation; good for being a control in experiments
