What is the main function of the Nervous and Endocrine systems?
Sense outside changes and send signals throughout the body in order to respond to them
What type of communication does the endocrine system use? Nervous?
Endocrine
Chemical: Hormones
Nervous
Electrical: Nerve impulses
What does the endocrine gland do? What happens afterwards?
Endocrine gland senses change in body and releases the cells that have the hormone
The hormone travels though blood stream and signals a receptor on the target cell telling it to do something
What do nerve cells do? What are three functions of the Nervous system
Nerve cells communicate between one another using electrical signals
1) Sense changes in environment
- Movement
- Reflexes
What is the difference between endocrine and nervous system
Endocrine: Slow, takes time for hormones to be produced and travel through blood stream
Nervous: Fast, electrical signals
What is the endocrine system made of?
Glands located throughout the body that produce hormones
What are some examples of hormones (4)
adrenaline hormone
What organs/structures make up the nervous system? What is the difference between the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous system?
Brain, spinal cord, nerves
CNS: Brain, spinal cord
PNS: Nerves
What are the three main parts of the brain?
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Brain Stem
What does the cerebrum control?
Controls voluntary (conscious) activities of body (like movement), intelligence, learning, emotions, judgement
What does the cerebellum do?
Balances and coordinates muscle action
What does the brain stem do?
Connects brain and spinal cord. Does all the things we don't think about that happen naturally (keeps us alive by controlling vital unconscious functions like breathing)
What is a neuron? What is the function of the neuron?
biological word for nerve cells
Basic unit of the nervous system
Carries messages
What do sensory neurons do? What system is it part of
Brings information to the brain
Part of peripheral nervous system- outside of the body: sound, taste, smell)
What do interneurons do? What system is it part of?
Processes the information in the central nervous system
Transfer and makes sense of messages in the CNS (central nervous system)
What is the function of motor neurons and what system are they part of?
Brings messages away from brain and tells body how to respond
Part of peripheral nervous system
What do dendrites do?
Brings impulses from the environment or other neurons toward the cell body
